Havre High School may be changing its policy on whether or not students can leave campus for lunch to a performance-based allowance.
School administrators will be bringing to the school board this month a proposal to change the policy, which currently allows all student to leave campus for lunch break, to only allowing those who have been doing well in school to leave.
Andy Carlson, superintendent of Havre Public Schools, said that he and local business people, the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce and school administrators are going to meet Thursday at 7:30 a.m. to have a conversation about their decision.
Carlson said that the allowance would be based on absences, behavior, credits earned and so forth. The driving force behind this change is to try and lower the amount of absences that happen after lunch
“Being on pace to graduate is the number one factor on whether or not you’re able to leave campus,” Carlson said.
This will also help communication between students and parents regarding where they are in the high school career. A student who cannot leave for lunch needs to work more and those who are allowed to leave for lunch are on a straight path to graduation.
After the meeting with the community for final input, the school administrators will take the proposed change to the Havre Public School Board of Trustees for a vote.
