Ponies battle tough Malta, Lewistown teams on the HMS track
The Havre High track teams closed out a busy week Saturday as the Blue Ponies hosted Malta and Lewistown in a track triangular. The meet at the Havre Middle School track was the final tune up for the Ponies before they head to Belgrade for the Central A divisional meet May 15-16.
After competing in the Glasgow Top 10 meet last Tuesday, both Havre and Malta held back some of their top athletes and as a result, Lewistown ran away with both meets. The Lewistown boys finished first with 101 points, compared to 47.5 for Havre and 35.5 for Malta. The Lewistown girls took first thanks to 78 points, while Havre was second with 64 and Malta was last with 30.
Due to Havre’s hectic schedule as of late, head coach John Ita did not want to overwork some of his athletes and because of that some didn’t compete in all the events they normally do. Nate Rismon for instance, one of Havre’s best athletes, did not run the 200- or 400-meter dash like he is accustomed to doing.
Yet, the Havre boys did a solid job of scoring points in Rismon’s absence and one runner in particular who stepped up was Jacob LaBrie, who finished first in the 400 with a time of 55.4. Luke Karnauskas also took home first place for HHS in the 800 with a time of 2:13.7. Brock Ross and Ivar Aageson were the other Pony boys to notch a first-place finish. Ross won the 3,200 with a time of 12:08.5 and Aageson won the high jump with a jump of 5-8.
Gunnar Aageson (pole vault), Rocky Kuhr (shot put), Nick Keller (high jump and triple jump) Zach Hunt (400 and triple jump) also finished in the top three in their respective events.
“It was a beautiful day, we had great weather and it was very successful,” Ita said. “We had a lot of kids that got to try some different events and compete against some different kids. That’s what this meet was really about. We rested Nate and some other kids and that’s ’cause we wanted to get them healthy and get those other kids more of a chance to compete.”
The Havre girls also had a solid showing and had a number of girls win events in the meet starting with Naomi Terry, who finished first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.4. Terry also came in second in the 200.
Logan Huebsch, who has put together a spectacular freshman season for the Ponies, had another solid outing Saturday and this time she did it in the jumps instead of the hurdles. She ended up winning the triple jump with a jump of 30-0, while also notching a second place in the long jump.
Rachel David did her part for Havre in the distance races as she won the 800 with a time of 2:37.6 and finished second in the 400.
Others who finished in the top three for Havre were Kristen Nash with a third in the discus, Ireland Coyne, who was second in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles, Corissa White, who was third in the 100 hurdles and Loni Waid, who was third in the pole vault and 400.
Jordan Keith was another Havre girl who had a solid performance as she won the discus with a throw of 91-10, while also finishing with a throw of 30-11 in the shot put to come away with second.
“I thought our kids competed really well,” Ita said. “Almost every one of our freshmen girls had a PR and they just competed really hard. Now we will have two weeks before divisionals, and we will hit it hard this week then rest up a bit next week before divisionals.”
The Havre High track teams will both be off this next weekend and will not compete again until May 15-16 in Belgrade, when they will take part in the Central A divisional meet. The state meet will be in Laurel May 22-23.
