Beeter tennis, golf teams are thriving

It has been a strong spring for Chinook High School sports, and that includes golf and tennis.

This past weekend, the Chinook girls tennis team, the defending Class B-C champions, were in Helena for the Dawg Bite Tournament, which featured many of the top B-C girls programs. In Helena, Chinook won four of the six bracket championships.

In the No. 1’s bracket Chinook’s Mariah Swank and Brooke Nicholson met in the championship match, Swank beat her teammate in three sets to claim the title. Sierra Swank also took first in the No. 3 bracket in singles and Megan Pruttis was first in the No. 4.

In doubles, Lauren Harshman and Cortney Gunderson finished first in the No. 1 bracket, while Hattie Niederegger and Stella Rigg finished third in the No. 2 bracket.

Chinook also played host to Fort Benton Tuesday and will host rival Chester/J-I Friday. The Beeters wrap up the regular season Saturday in Choteau. The Northern B-C Divisional tournament is set for next weekend in Havre.

On the golf course, it’s also been a busy and successful time for the Beeters. Last Saturday, Chinook played in the Fort Benton Class C Tournament and the boys took home top honors with a score of 254. Lane Seymour led the way with an 80 to win the tournament, while Derek Bell was third with an 84 and Kade Friede was fifth with a 90. Ian McIntosh also placed eighth overall with a 93. On the girls side, Chinook finished second with a 389 and was led by a third-place finish from Jordan Surber, who shot 119.

On Monday, the Beeters were back at Signal Point for the Fort Benton Class B tournament, which featured Conrad, Fort Benton, Malta, Choteau, Cut Bank, Harlem and Rocky Boy. The Chinook boys placed second with a 363, 20 strokes behind Conrad.

On the leaderboard, Seymour placed second with an 83, while McIntosh was fifth with an 87 and Friede was ninth with a 93. In the girls meet in Fort Benton, Surber placed eighth for the Beeters with a 119.

There will be two big golf tournament this weekend on the Hi-Line. On Friday, Harlem will host the Harlem Invitational, and Chinook will host the Chinook Invite Saturday at the Chinook Golf Club.
