Ponies do well at Glasgow Top 10 meet

There is something a little extra special about competing at the Glasgow Top 10 meet for the Havre High track teams and when they performed at the meet Tuesday in Glasgow, the Blue Ponies seemed to take their level of performance to another level.

The meet, which is made up of the Top 10 performers at each event from schools around the area, is held annually at the Glasgow track and was again this year as a number of Pony boys and girls athletes were in attendance.

"I thought the kids did really well," HHS head coach John Ita said. "They were a little more pumped up I think because of the environment. They wanted to see how they stack up against other really good kids and I thought they did an outstanding job."

Nate Rismon, who has starred on the track all season, was at it again in Glasgow, finishing second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.45 as well as fourth in the 200 with a time of 23.68. Rismon was also part of the 400 and 1,600 relay teams that both finished in fifth place. The 400 relay team which posted a time of 46.59 featured Rismon, Jacob LaBrie, Luke Karnauskas and Gunnar Aageson, while the 1,600 relay team that had time of 3:42.76 consisted of Rismon, LaBrie, Karnauskas and Ivar Aageson.

Karnauskas also placed as an individual in the 800 with a time of 2:09.9. Gunnar Aageson was third in the pole vault after registering a height of 12-6. Ivar Aageson was seventh in the pole vault with a height of 11-6. Nick Keller also finished second in the high jump with a jump of 6-00.

"Nate ran really well again for us," Ita said. "I think he kind of hit the wall there today but he got on the podium twice and just did a phenomenal job."

The girls team was led by Logan Huebsch, who made quite an impression in her first Top 10 meet with a second-place showing in the 300 hurdles and a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles. In the 300 hurdles, she finished with a time of 49.32, while in the 100 she ran a time of 17.62.

Naomi Terry was the only other Pony girl to finish in the Top 5 in an individual event and she did so in the 300 hurdles, where she finished in sixth with a time of 51.65. No other HHS girl finished in the Top 6 or made the podium but a number were close such as Rachel David, who finished seventh in the 400, Megan Erickson, who finished seventh on the 1,600, Emilee Cariveau, who was ninth in the 400, Ireland Coyne, who ended up in eighth in the 300 100 hurdles and Carleigh Rennick, who finished 10th in the discus.

The girls 1,600 relay team, which is made up of Terry, Erickson, David and Kaylee Nystrom did manage a sixth-place finish with a time of 4:28.06. The 400 relay team wound up finishing eighth.

"I thought everyone competed hard and it was just to see the kids try to compete with the other kids," Ita said. "They knew they were competing against some very good athletes and I think that helped them be motivated to do their best and show they can compete against them."

Chinook's Kyler Johnson and Harlem's Tristin Gone also won events Tuesday in Glasgow. Overall, the Beeters placed 11 boys and girls combined, while Harlem placed seven and Turner placed four.

The Havre High track teams will be back in action on Thursday in Great Falls at 3:30.
