HHS students to perform at state music festival

The Western State Music Solo and Ensemble Festival is set for Friday and Saturday in Missoula and 52 students from Havre High School will be performing.

David Johnke, Havre High band director, said students qualified for this event by participating in a solo or an ensemble of under 20 students at the District 7 Music Festival that was held in Havre.

"If they received a superior rating from a judge at District Festival, they qualified to go to the state level," he said.

Johnke said students from across the western part of Montana will perform at the festival.

"It's mostly an educational event, not really a competition," he said. "There are no winners of the competition. It's there for the educational aspect and to encourage the kids to continue and to want to get better."

Johnke added that there will be a variety of performances.

"It's an event that hosts band, choir and orchestra students, so you get a mixture of everything," he said. "I hope that (my students) come back wanting to achieve even more and strive harder for excellence."

The festival will be held at the University of Montana and will begin at 8 a.m. each day.
