HHS track teams shine on the Malta dirt

The Havre High track teams had a nice change of pace Tuesday as they went to Malta to run on a different type of track and against some different competition.

And when it was all said and done, the Blue Pony boys posted a second-place finish, while the Havre girls ended up in third at the Malta Invitational in Malta Tuesday. The day was dominated by Malta, which swept the team titles. The Malta boys had 82.5 points compared to 76.5 for Havre. Harlem was third with 68. In the girls competition, Malta dominated with 163 points. Chinook finished second with 99 and Havre was third with 74.

“I thought we did very well,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “We ran on the dirt track and the kids really did well on it. We had a lot of kids set personal records. Both our teams did well. The kids competed really hard.

“It’s not fun running on a dirt track on eight (one-)inch spikes, it just isn’t,” he added. “But, everyone has to run on it and actually our kids did really well. They just went out and did it.”

Nate Rismon was a catalyst once again for the Ponies, winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.03, but he also took fifth in the pole vault and helped the 400-relay team take home first and the 1,600 relay team take second. The other members of the 400-relay team were Gunnar Aageson, Richard Belcourt and Jacob LaBrie. The team posted a time of 48.74.

Gunnar Aageson was another solid contributor for HHS, finishing second in the pole vault in addition to running the short relay. Ivar Aageson, who is on the 1,600-relay team, finished fourth in the pole vault and the high jump.

Havre got strong performances from many others on the boys team including Luke Karnauskas, who finished third in the 800, fifth in the high jump and ran on the long relay. Others included Zach Hunt, who finished sixth in the 400 and fourth in the long jump, Jacob Irvin, who was fifth in the 110 hurdles, Belcourt, who was third in the long jump and fifth I the high jump and Keith Thomas, who finished fifth in the discus.

“Luke really did a great job,” Ita said. “He stepped in when we needed him and he did really. He just competed so hard.”

The Havre girls were led once again by their stellar 1,600-relay team that finished in first place with a time of 4:43.32. The long relay was made up of Naomi Terry, Addison Kinsella, Kaylee Nystrom and Megan Erickson.

Erickson also had an outstanding individual day in the distance races as she posted a second-place showing in the 800 and a fourth-place, finishing in the 1,600. Kinsella also placed as an individual finishing fourth in the 400. Emilee Cariveau finished fifth in the 800 to close out a day of strong distance running for the HHS girls.

“Megan Erickson did really well, like she has at every meet,” Ita said. “She just does such a great job and she really competes in those long runs.”

Ireland Coyne was another Havre girl that impressed Tuesday, and she did so in the hurdles, coming in second in the 100 and fourth in the 300 hurdles. The Pony girls also did well in the jumps as Kiara Christensen finished third in the high jump, with Logan Huebsch ending up fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump.

The Havre girls also had a good showing in the pole vault with Loni Waid placing third in the event and Laine Shettel coming in fifth. Not to be outdone, the Pony girls also got solid points from the throwers as Carleigh Rennick was second in the discus, while Jordan Keith was fourth and Kristen Nash finished sixth.

“We got some good performances from a lot of girls,” Ita said. “Logan did really well. She did a great job in the long jump in her first time doing it. We also got points in the hurdles and from our throwers, which was great to see.”

The Ponies will be back in action this Saturday when they will travel to Whitefish for the Whitefish Invitational.
