Even though the weather forecast predicted rain, the showers didn't come until the end of the Havre Triangular track meet against North Star and Chinook Tuesday afternoon, which meant great conditions for all the athletes competing.
Both Havre High track teams have been performing well of late and each continued that trend Tuesday at the Havre Middle School track, as the boys team ended up in first place for the third straight meet, while the girls won their first meet of the year. The HHS boys finished with 91 points, compared to 30 for North Star and 18 for Chinook. The Havre girls finished with 74 points to take home first place, well ahead of Chinook, which finished in second with 41 and North Star in third with 30.
"It turned out to a be a great day," HHS head coach John Ita said. "We had some great weather up until the end there and really allowed us to have some good performances. It was a fun meet, kind of a like a practice on steroids and it gave kids a chance to pick one or two events that they really wanted to do and that was a good thing."
The Blue Pony boys got another strong performance from their sprinters as Michael Loftus won the 100-meter dash, Nate Rismon took home the 200 and Ivar Aageson captured first place in the 400. Luke Karnauskas also contributed with a win in the 800 as well as a first-place finish in the high jump, while Bobby O'Leary won the 3,200 for the Ponies.
In all, the Ponies would capture a total of 11 first-place finishes, compared to three each from North Star and Chinook. Other HHS athletes who won their respective events included Gunnar Aageson in the pole vault, Thomas Keith in the shot put and Richard Belcourt in the triple jump. The Ponies also won both the 400 and 1,600 relays with relative ease.
"Our relay teams, especially our boys relays did really well again today," Ita said. "We also had some kids scoring points in the throwing events for us so that was good to see. All around I thought there were some really great performances."
North Star was paced by Matthew Helmbrecht, who took home first place in both the discus and javelin throws for the Knights. Payton Peterson also won the triple jump for North Star.
Chinook also took home three first-place finishes with two of them coming from Cody McCracken, who finished first in the both the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Kyler Johnson also won the 1,600 for the Beeters.
On the girls side of things, it was a little more competitive, but not by much as the Pony girls performed really well, particularly in the distance runs and the hurdles. Even though there was no 3,200, Havre got victories in the 1,600, 800, 400 and 200, as well as the 100 hurdles, the 300 hurdles and both the 400 and 1,600 relays.
Rachel David made her presence felt again in the distance races as she cruised to easy victories in both the 400 and 800. Megan Erickson notched a first-place finish in the 1,600, while Naomi Terry finished first in the 200. Freshman Logan Huebsch also had another stellar day as she swept the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, taking home first in each event. Kristen Nash also finished first in the javelin to give HHS a total of nine first-place finishes in the meet.
Chinook, which proved to be a solid competitor for Havre, brought home a total of five event winners, while North Star finished with two. The Beeters were led by Britney Nelson, who put together another impressive performance en route to capturing first place in both the shot put and discus. Kaitlyn Neibauer took home the first-place prize in the high jump, while Kailey Kleinjan prevented the Havre girls from making a clean sweep of the running events by winning the 100. Abi Ellison also grabbed first-place honors in the triple jump.
For the Knights, it was all about senior Tylynnn Rettig, who continues to do well on the track and in the field events. And while she helped North Star get points in the relays, she did her best work in the long jump and pole vault, winning both events.
The Ponies will be off until Saturday when they will head to Belgrade to take part in the Belgrade Invitational.
