Blue Ponies score big at Cal Wearley

The Havre High track teams are defined by youth on both the boys and girls teams. But, at least for one day, the Blue Pony boys proved that age doesn't matter as they took home the first-place prize at the Cal Wearly Invitational Wednesday at the Havre Middle School track.

The Havre boys took home the top spot at the meet after finishing up with 83 points, just three points ahead of second-place finisher Cut Bank. But not to be completely outdone, the Pony girls had a solid outing of their own as they ended up with a total of 44 points to come away with a fourth-place finish.

"Right now we are just so young," HHS head coach John Ita said. "But it was nice to see some of our boys do well. Nate Rismon really ran well for us and it was good for us to score some points. But we have a lot of things to work on, we need to learn how to warm up and prepare. We need to just keep building through every part of the process."

If there was anyone who stole the show at the meet, it was easily Rismon, who not only won the 200-meter dash and the 400, but also competed in the 400 and 1,600 relay, both events in which the Ponies took home the first-place prize.

Yet, Rismon was not the only Havre sprinter to shine as Michael Loftus also had a stellar day, winning the 100, placing fourth in the 200 and being a key member of each relay team. Gunnar Aageson also had a solid day for the Ponies as an individual, finishing third in the pole vault and sixth in the 100. Ivar Aageson also contributed as a member of the 1,600 relay team as well as by notching a third-place finish in the 400.

The remaining points scorers for the HHS boys include Nick Keller, who was third in the high jump, Richard Belcourt, who finished third in the long jump and Brock Ross, who ended up in sixth in the 1,600. Jacob LaBrie also pitched in by running on both the 400 and 1,600 relay teams.

On the girls side of things, there were not as many points scored but two who led the way for Havre were Rachel David and Megan Erickson. David finished third in the both the 400 and 800, while Erickson came in fourth-place in the 800 before finishing sixth in the 400.

Others who contributed points for the Havre girls were Naomi Terry, who was third in the 300 hurdles as well as Logan Hubesch, who finished fourth in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the 100 hurdles. Terry was also part of the girls 1,600 relay team that took first as was freshmen Kaylee Nystrom.

"It was a another good day for us," Ita said. "Right now we just need to learn how to warm up and stay warmed up. We just need to get better each day and keep looking ahead."

The Havre high track teams will be back in action this Saturday when both teams will be at home to host the Havre Invitational at the Havre Middle School track.
