First win: Ponies club Browning

Havre pitchers combine to throw a perfect game against Browning at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field

With all of its available players healthy and in the lineup for the first time this season, the Havre High softball team showed just how good it can be when at full strength in a dominating win over Central A rival Browning.

The Indians, who paid a visit to the Blue Ponies at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field Tuesday night, proved to be no match for HHS, which dismantled Browning by the score of 17-0 to improve to 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in Central A conference play.

"This was really the first time this season that we had everybody healthy and playing," HHS head coach Bob Evans Sr. said. "So that was good. I think when we have our team at full strength, we are going to be a pretty good ball club. The main thing that we wanted to focus on tonight was some pitching and I thought we got some good innings out of our pitchers."

Good may be understating things a bit as Havre pitchers Dani Wagner and Paige Henderson combined to throw a perfect game against the Indians, who didn't have a player reach base safely throughout the five-inning game. Wagner, who started the game will earn the win after striking out three batters in three shutout innings of work. Henderson took over in the fourth and finished the game strong as she retired six straight batters to close things out.

"I was really pleased with our pitching," Evans said. "I thought this was a good opportunity for our pitchers to get some innings because they haven't got a lot of experience and I thought both Dani and Paige threw the ball really well."

After the Indians failed to mount any offense in the top of the first inning, the Ponies quickly jumped out to a big lead thanks in large part to an inside-the-park grand slam by Morgan Mazurkiewicz that gave Havre a 6-0 lead.

Later, in the bottom of the second inning, the Pony lead got even bigger as Shania Carlson ripped a two-run single that put Havre ahead 8-0. Payton Howard and Jacey McDonald also had runs batted in during the second to put the Ponies in front 10-0.

Then, in the bottom of the third inning, Henderson put an exclamation point on the win for Havre as she drilled a three-run home run over the left field fence to give the Ponies an insurmountable 13-0 lead.

"Paige hit the ball really well," Evans said. "She hit a home run in Great Falls too this past weekend and almost had another one tonight that just went foul. But overall, I thought all the girls hit the ball pretty well."

Henderson was stellar at the plate for Havre going 2-for-3 with a double to go along with her home run and a total of three RBIs. Mazurkiewicz also had a great day at the dish for the Ponies, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Carlson had two hits, including a triple and three RBIs, while Tara McCormick, Lucy Tarlton and Jacqueline Martin each had two hits and an RBI in the win.

The Ponies will be off for the rest of the week but will be back in action Monday when they will travel to Lewistown for a showdown against Central A rival Lewistown. The action will get underway at 4 p.m.
