An open mic night is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday at Triple Dog Brewery and people are urged to bring their instruments and words to share with others.
Dave Martens is heading up the new event, which is planned as a weekly happening, and he said that anyone who wants to participate in the open mic should sign up beforehand. There will be a sign-in sheet at the brewery from when they open at noon until the start of the open mic, at 5 p.m.
“Depending on interest, there will be 10 to 15 minutes per person,” Martens said, adding that this is variable.
He said he has had a handful of people who have said that they were interested in performing. He himself will be playing music at the event, and there is a comedian and other musicians who have said they were going to sign up.
“I’m hopeful that it will be something that can kind of sustain itself when it gets up and running,” Martens said.
He said the fact that the brewery stops serving at 8 p.m. will help people avoid any problems with going to work the next morning.
The open mic is sponsored by KNMC 90.1 and the radio station will be getting the word out about the night, he said. He said he hopes that eventually, local bands will begin to host open mic nights with their PA systems, as the radio does not have one.
“I played music a lot in Missoula and it was very easy to get involved in music there,” Martens said. “I think there are limited opportunities for people to get involved with music here. There are great bands here, but if you aren’t connected with people, where do you start?”
He said he has high hopes for the event, between the built-in audience at the brewery and getting the word out around town.
