Most people think of track and field as a spring and summer sport. But former Havre Blue Pony great Sammy Evans makes her mark in track and field in the winter.
Evans, who has been a star for the University of Montana Griz track teams the last three years, just completed a record-setting indoor track season at UM. Evans is a junior at UM, and had already held several records for the Griz, but this indoor season, she shattered some more records.
Recently, at the Big Sky Conference indoor championships in Flagstaff, Arizona. Evans won the conference triple jump crown for the second straight season straight season. She went 41-7.25 to come within an inch and a half of breaking her own school record and won the event by 17 inches. Evans won the triple jump seven times in eight meets during the indoor season. It was also her third conference title in a row, as she also captured the 2014 Big Sky triple jump championship in the outdoor season a year ago.
Evans also broke UM’s indoor long jump record at the Big Sky championships, leaping 19-4.75 and overall, she scored 18 points for the Grizzlies at the indoor championships, which left her just two point shy of earning the event’s Most Valuable Athlete award.
Evans, who currently holds the triple jump school record at UM, Havre High and Havre Middle School, will redshirt this outdoor season, and will resume her varsity track and field career during the 2016 indoor season.
