The Havre Police Department is handing out free gun locks. The locks were paid for through a grant. Police Chief Gabe Matosich said most new guns have locks with them, but people tend to own lots of older guns, many without locks. The locks are meant to be kid-proof, because younger people tend to play with guns when they shouldn't. Now that you mention it, many adults do the same without having an excuse. The locks will save lives.

Sunnyside Intermediate School looks pretty snazzy this week. The classroom doors have been entirely decorated by the students. Congrats to the winners of the contest for coming up with good-looking doors, and congrats to all the students who took part.

Once again, Havre educators have been honored at the state level. The Montana Council for Exceptional Children Conference honors a teacher-paraprofessional team for their excellence in teaching. This year the Highland Park Primary School educators Kynette Stortz and Renee Pribyl won the Region 2 award. Congratulations.

Rocky Boy Elementary School students were a model for schools that are encouraging reading. During National Reading Month, the students were encouraged to read books. The goal was 1,800 books. The students hit 2,162 books. The students were treated to a special guest at a student assembly — Rich Uncle Pennybags from the game Monopoly — played by librarian Marj Sheehey.
