The Rocky Boy Morning Stars had their best regular season ever since joining the District 1B not long ago. And all signs pointed to the Morning Stars once again advancing to this week’s Northern B Divisional tournament in Malta.
But for whatever reason, it wasn’t meant to be.
After opening the 1B tournament this past weekend in Conrad with a 47-38 win over the Shelby Coyotes, the third-seeded Morning Stars failed to win another game, and their season ended with a loss in Saturday morning’s loser-out round.
The Morning Stars started strong, as they took care of the pesky Coyotes Thursday afternoon. A 16-12 run in the fourth quarter gave the Morning Stars the cushion they needed to advance to the semifinals. In the first-round win, Jude the Boy paced Rocky Boy with 10 points.
The Morning Stars continued to play well Friday afternoon, but they came up short in their semifinal bout with second-seeded Choteau. The Bulldogs beat the Morning Stars 50-47 in a back-and-forth affair that saw Rocky Boy trail 26-21 at half, but take the lead in the third quarter, only to give back early in the fourth. From there, Rocky Boy couldn’t quite catch the Bulldogs. In the loss, Jai-Lynn Day Child scored 17 points and Rosie Parker added 13.
Choteau’s victory meant the Morning Stars would need to beat the Conrad Cowgirls on their home floor Saturday morning to advance to the Northern B. But the Cowgirls came to play, and Rocky Boy never got on track in a heartbreaking 51-47 loss. Day Child scored 18 points in what was the Morning Stars’ final game.
Fairfield went on to capture the 1B crown, while Choteau finished second, Conrad third and Cut Bank fourth.
On the other side of the Northern B, the Harlem Wildcats saw their season end in two losses at the 2B tournament this past weekend in Wolf Point.
Thursday, Harlem opened the tourney with a narrow 45-39 defeat at the hands of Plentywood. That meant the Wildcats would need to beat Glasgow in order to advance to the Northern B.
But Saturday morning, the Scotties took out the Wildcats 49-37 in a loser-out contest, ending Harlem’s season. Harlem battled hard and trailed by just one point at halftime. But the Scotties went on a 16-6 run in the third quarter, and Harlem couldn’t catch up in the final eight minutes. Autumn Little Plume scored 15 points in Harlem’s final game of 2015.
As expected, Malta captured the 2B title, defeating Wolf Point in the championship game. Plentywood placed third and Glasgow finished fourth, and those four teams will join the four teams from the 1B at the Northern B Divisional, which runs Thursday through Saturday in Malta. The top two teams from the Northern B advance to the Class B state tourney March 12-14 in Great Falls.
