Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Tylynn Rettig, North Star Girls Basketball

North Star standout will run track in

college, but now right she's excited about the

9C basketball tournament

There is nothing more exciting for a high school basketball player than tournament time. And for Tylynn Rettig of the North Star Knights, this next run in the postseason will be her last.

Rettig, who excels for the Knights in volleyball and track, as well as basketball, has had a great career for North Star. And even though her senior season has been hampered slightly by injury, she is ready to close it out with a bang, starting this week at the District 9C tournament at the HHS gymnasium in Havre.

Rettig, who has missed some games late in the season due to an ankle injury, is ready to go for the 9C as the fifth-seeded Knights try to qualify for divisionals for the third time in her career.

Per usual, the 9C is a tough league and the Knights (10-8, 8-6) are among five teams that have a realistic chance to earn one of the three spots available in the Northern C divisional tournament next week in Great Falls.

Rettig, who is committed to Carroll College in track, is no stranger to the big stage and was an essential part of North Star's third-place finish in state track last season. At the 2014 Class C state meet, Rettig placed in three events, finishing second in the long jump, as well as third in the 100-meter dash and sixth in the 200 meters.

Yet, as good as Rettig is in track, she is equally impressive in volleyball as she earned second-team All-State honors in Class C this past season, while helping the Knights to a fourth-place finish at divisionals.

However, the biggest thing on Rettig's mind right now is helping the Knights finish in the top three at the 9C tournament, so they can advance to divisionals for the third time in four years, while at the same time, keeping her career on the hardwood alive just a little longer.

In advance of the start of this week's 9C tournament, the Havre Daily News caught up with Rettig for five questions.

HDN: How was your senior season gone?

Rettig: "Besides getting hurt, it has gone really well. I like the girls that we play with. We play with four returning starters. We have been playing together forever so we have good chemistry. It's a pretty good group of girls, just the style we play with is pretty fun."

HDN: Describe your team's style of play.

Rettig: "We are a fast team, so we fast break and kind of like run and gun, which is a fun way to play."

HDN: What's your favorite thing about playing basketball?

Rettig: "It would probably be passing. I like getting assists and helping my teammates."

HDN: What do you think your team (North Star) can achieve in the 9C?

Rettig: "I think we can end up number one. We beat Chinook and they are number one, so I think we can do anything if we play right."

HDN: "What is the most memorable moment of your basketball career?

Rettig: "Well, we have beaten the number one team in our conference, so I guess that's always fun and making it to divisionals, two out of three years and hopefully again this year."
