Three-peat: State wrestling champions

Havre Blue Ponies take home hardware, five individual champs; Chinook Sugarbeeters are Class C champs.

BILLINGS - It was a weekend to remember for wrestling along the Hi-Line as the Havre Blue Ponies and Chinook Sugarbeeters each came away from the All-Class state tournament in Billings with state championships.

Havre, which entered the tournament at Rimrock Auto Arena at Metra Park as the two-time defending Class A state champions, successfully defended their title, amassing a school-record 297 points to complete the three-peat. Sidney finished second with 268 and Columbia Falls finished third.

The three-peat was the second during the tenure of Havre head coach Scott Filius and also marked the seventh state title in the last nine years for Havre.

"This was fun," Filius said. "The kids wrestled their tails off. We had a blast this weekend."

Havre took a total of 16 wrestlers to the state tournament and placed a school-record 13. Of those 13, five won individual titles including Grayson Brenna at 132 pounds, Parker Filius at 145 pounds, Jase Stokes at 160 pounds, Jace Billy at 205 pounds and Travis Adams at heavyweight.

Gunnar Aageson also took second for the Ponies, while Havre also had four third-place finishers, three fourth-place finishers and another that finished fifth. All 16 Pony wrestlers contributed to the effort by winning at least two matches.

It was a similar story for Chinook, which easily captured the team title over Arlee with 68.5 points and a final winning margin of 46.5 points. The victory was Chinook's sixth since the Montana High School Association began awarding a Class C-only trophy back in 2007.

The Beeters also got points from all seven of their wrestlers who competed, but the biggest win of the weekend for Chinook came on finals night when sophomore Tate Niederegger salted away an individual state title at 132 pounds. Jake Norby and Kenneth Pruttis also finished fourth for the Beeters at 145 and 170 pounds, respectively.

"All of our kids did a phenomenal job this weekend, we couldn't ask for anything more out of any of them," Chinook head coach Perry Miller said.

In, all the Hi-Line not only brought home two state team titles, but eight area wrestlers wrestled on finals night, including Harlem's Brendan Johnson, who placed second in B-C at 160 pounds. The Hi-Line also had a total of 17 wrestlers reach the medal stand Saturday night.
