The road leading to the 2015 Class B-C state wrestling tournament is now complete. And the last stop along the way for area teams was Big Sandy.
Saturday, Big Sandy played host to the Northern B-C Divisional tournament, where 10 teams battled it out for spots in this weekend’s state tourney. The Conrad Cowboys successfully defended their Northern Division title scoring 168 points. Cut Bank was a distant second with 133, while Class C Chinook was third with 128 points. Harlem finished sixth with 88 points, while Chester/J-I was eighth with 46 points and Big Sandy was ninth with 28.
Individually, the Sugarbeeters, who will be strong contenders for the Class C title this weekend in Billings, qualified seven wrestlers for state, while crowning two champions and marching five grapplers into the finals Saturday.
As expected, Tate Niederegger led the way for Chinook, easily winning the 132-pound Northern title. Niederegger pinned Valier’s Dylan Monroe in the championship match. The Beeters also saw Kenneth Pruttis and Jesse Dannels go head-to-head in the 170-pound final, with Pruttis winning a 12-8 decision. At 145, Jake Norby reached the championship match before losing to Cut Bank’s Jace Berkram, 7-4, while Kevin Young was pinned by Shelby’s Streeter Stirling in the 205-pound title bout. Derek Bell also placed third for the Beeters at 160 pounds, while Colton Liddle was fourth at 113.
Harlem has had a lot of success in recent years, but the Wildcats’ depth is down this season. Still, state title contender Brendan Johnson cruised to the 160-pound title Saturday, pinning Conrad’s Tyler Schultz in the final. The Wildcats had three wrestlers reach the finals, including heavyweight Denton Cornell, who lost to Cut Bank’s Justin Pfeifer. T’Jay Allen placed second at 138, losing to Cut Bank’s Randon Anderson. Gavin Horn also finished third at 113 pounds and Challence Jackson placed fourth at 126 and Reece Hutton fourth at heavyweight.
C/J-I will send three wrestlers to state, and Big Sandy will send two after Saturday’s divisional tournament. The Hawks got a second-place finish from Brendan May at 103 pounds, as he lost to Conrad’s Kyle Richter. Sam Deffinbaugh (152) and Brett Henke (182) each placed fourth for the Hawks. Josh Solf (145) and Jacob Schuster (170) both placed fourth for the Pioneers.
Now, all of the local wrestlers who qualified, will trek to Billings for the 2015 Class B-C state tournament, which runs Friday-Saturday in the Rimrock Auto Arena at the Billings Metra.
