Lights crown two champs at Plummer Classic

One week after making the long trip east to compete in the Missouri Valley Invitational, the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team was back on the mat this past Saturday. Only this time, the Lights were up against some familiar rivals.

The No. 3 Lights competed in the annual Tyler Plummer Classic, hosted by Dickinson State University Saturday in Dickinson, N.D. And though they were short-handed, the Lights came away with a third-place finish, and seven wrestlers placing in the top four individually.

Northern, which was without star grapplers Jared Miller (174) and Willie Miller (184) scored 105.5 points in a tournament that featured arch rival UGF, which finished second, and Dickinson State, which placed first with 135 points.

Both Millers were out with injuries this weekend, but the Lights still made plenty of noise. Northern crowned two individual champions for the second week in a row, as Ethan Hinebauch (165) and Toby Cheff (HWT) both won their respective brackets. Hinebauch went 3-0 with three pins, including one over DSU’s Taylor Hodel in the championship bout. Cheff went just 2-0 with bonus points in both matches, but he didn’t even have to wrestle his final due to an injury forfeit.

In all, the Lights marched six wrestlers into the finals Saturday, but Andrew Caballa (125), Cesar Montes (141), Brandon Weber (149) and Garrett DeMers (197) came up short in their bids to claim Tyler Plummer titles.

Caballa lost a 4-3 decision to DSU’s Brice Gorsline in the 125-pound title match, while Montes, who wrestled one of his best tournament’s to date, was pinned by UGF star Kyle Wilson in the 141-pound championship match. Weber, making just his second start for the Lights, suffered a 5-3 loss to DSU’s Seth Ehlang in the 149-pound title bout, while DeMers lost a close, 4-3 decision to DSU’s Hudson Buck in the 197-pound championship match. Tommy Cooper also placed fourth for the Lights at 157 pounds. The sophomore reached the semifinals before losing 5-2 to UGF’s Chad Cebulski. He bounced back to win in the consolation semis, before dropping a 6-4 decision to UGF’s Khaldoon Rashid.

The Lights will return to action this Saturday when they dual region rival Embry-Riddle in Phoenix. Northern is just three weeks out from hosting the 2015 NAIA West Regional Qualifier.
