The auditions for “Over the River and Through the Woods” tonight and Wednesday call for older people to play Italian grandparents.
Audrey Barger is directing the play and she said that it is a great opportunity for older people who want to try acting.
She said she thinks that older people are often uncomfortable with trying out for plays if they have never done it before. The play calls for two men and two women to be cast as maternal and paternal Italian grandparents.
Parts for two younger people in their 20s or 30s are also available. One man and one woman are needed to play the grandson and the woman the grandparents are trying to connect him with.
“This is a hilariously funny and touching comedy about the differences in generations and the unconditional and supportive love of family,” the call for auditions reads. “The characters are genuine and easily identifiable with real life in today’s society.”
Barger said she chose this play to direct because she thinks many will enjoy it.
“I think everybody will be able to relate to this show,” she said. “It’s very funny and very touching. It’s a show about generations, family and how you always want something better for your children than you can attain for yourself.”
Barger said people interested in trying out do not need to prepare for it. They will simply be reading from a script and they do not need to speak in an Italian accent.
“The four older people will have Italian accents but I think that can be learned,” Barger said. “No experience is necessary.”
Tryouts are tonight and Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Montana State University-Northern Little Theatre in Cowan Hall. The play will run in April.
“If you’re interested, please think about coming and auditioning, because it’s a really fun show,” Barger said.
