Pony swimmers improve during busy weekend

The Montana State Swimming Championships are still three weeks away. But the clock is ticking for the Havre Blue Ponies.

The HHS boys and girls swim teams spent a busy weekend prepping for the upcoming state meet. Havre was in Great Falls Friday for the Great Falls Duals, then the Ponies moved on to compete in the prestigious Missoula Invitational Saturday at the University of Montana Grizzly Pool.

Friday, the Ponies went head-to-head with CMR and Great Falls High in a double-dual meet for the second time this season. And while the ponies moved their lineup around a bit, the results were good. CMR defeated the HHS girls 174-85 and the boys 122-86. GFH beat the HHS girls 154-112 and the boys 173-71.

Individually though, it was another good day in the pool for Havre. On the girls side, Aubri McCann led the way with a third-place finish 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:17.38, while Hannah Pepprock was fourth with a time of 1:19.10. McCann also swam to a fourth-place finish in the 100 freestyle (1:02.36). Jackie Martin raced to a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 1:23.08, while Lita Cammon was fourth in the 50 free at 28.01.

Lieza Reighard had a strong showing for the Ponies, too. She finished third in the 200 free with a time of 2:20.64, while she placed fifth in the 100 free with a time of 1:03.38. Carly Rennick also took fifth in the 200 IM. Jillian Reighard finished sixth in the lengthy 500 free, while the Pony relay teams performed well. The top Havre team finished second in the 200 free, fourth in the 200 medley and fifth in the 400 free.

Friday also showed just how much the HHS boys keep improving. Jamie Lieberg finished an outstanding second in the 200 free with a time of 2:21.54, while Jimmy May was right behind him in third (2:24.17). Zach Barnes had a big day as well. He finished second in the 100 fly (1:16.53) and fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:24.58). May placed sixth in that event as well.

Sophomore Shandon Oberqeull swam to a fifth place in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.52) and also placed seventh in the 50 free. Clayton Twombly wound up sixth in the 100 breaststroke and eighth in the 500 free, while Ben Seigel placed fourth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:40.69, as well as sixth in the 500 free. The Pony relay teams placed third in both the 400 free and the 200 free, as well as fifth in the 200 medley.

After the duals against Great Falls, the Ponies took to the water in Missoula Saturday. The Missoula Invite is close to state-level competition, with plenty of Class AA powers in attendance. On the girls side, Havre placed 10th with 35 points. Aubri McCann was Havre’s only Top-six finisher as she placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:17.39. Missoula Hellgate crushed the field with 554 points, followed by Bozeman and CMR.

In the boys meet, HHS placed 11th with 53 team points. Havre didn’t have any top individual finishes. Hellgate dominated that meet as well, scoring 469 points, while Bozeman was second and GFH was third.

The Ponies now have just one meet left to get ready for the state meet, which is Feb. 13-14 back in Missoula. This Saturday, Havre will travel to Helena for the Helena Invitational.
