Once a month this semester, the Montana State University-Northern Program Council Committee is presenting karaoke at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Building Ballroom.
Karaoke will be held Jan. 21, Feb. 18, March 18 and April 15.
The last night of the semester will include a competition and award the best karaoke singer a $100 gift certificate.
Karaoke apparently first appeared in the amusement quarter of Kobe, Japan, where it became popular among businessmen in the late 1970s. It gained widespread popularity in the United States in the late 1980s.
Karaoke is usually featured at bars, where patrons can perform on a stage and sing popular hits by reading lyrics electronically displayed on a monitor. A video often accompanies the music.
