The Havre Daily News presents Havre's new medium for arts, entertainment and culture, called "HAVMAT."
HAVMAT, or Havre Materials, will focus on cultural happenings and will be largely comprised of visual and written pieces from members of the community.
The publication is slated to come out monthly, with the first issue going out the first week of March. HAVMAT will be distributed to various business around town and free to the public.
Havre Daily News journalist John Paul Schmidt said he came up with the idea through talking to a friend who suggested there be some sort of monthly publication to include articles and features that the newspaper would not normally run.
The name HAVMAT was chosen as an attempt to separate the publication from its kin in other cities, Schmidt said, adding that this was going to be something different and, hopefully, new.
Some of the features that are planned for the publication are profiles on bands, bars and bartenders, local artists and writers and cultural leaders. A section for music, film, book and game reviews is also planned, as well as full-page sections of artwork and creative writing.
"Anything is possible at this point," Schmidt said. "I'd like the people of Havre to create this publication as much as possible. This is going to be created from what makes Havre Havre. Hence, the dumb name."
Anyone who would like to submit works of fiction or creative writing, artwork, photography, opinion pieces or have any ideas for recurring or one-time features for the magazine is welcome to do so by emailing [email protected] or by message to HAVMAT's Facebook page, located at http://www.facebook.com/havmatmagazine.
Deadline to be considered for the March issue of HAVMAT is Feb. 25. Follow the HAVMAT Facebook page for updates on deadlines, progress and stories.
