Three weeks is a long time to go without competition, in any sport. And then, when a return to competition means going up against the dominant team in your sport right away, the task can be daunting.
But the Havre High boys and girls swim teams handled that exact situation well as the Blue Ponies returned from the holiday break to partake in the annual Class A Invite Friday afternoon in Hardin. And while the Billings Central Rams were once again dominant, the Blue Ponies had some good moments and fast times of their own in the pool.
Billings Central captured both the boys and girls meets. The Rams won the girls meet with 208 points, while Havre finished second with 173 and Hardin was a distant third with 83. On the boys side, the Rams scored 205 points, while Hardin was second with 112 and the young Ponies were third with 93.
And while the Rams dominated for much of the day, especially on the girls side, Havre did well to keep pace.
Billings Central swimmers captured first-place honors in every race Saturday, except one, and the Pony swimmers dominated that race. Aubri McCann won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:17.09, while Hannah Pepprock finished second (1:22.14) and Alara Vogel finished fifth (1:29.57).
Overall, the Pony girls had a lot of outstanding individual performances in their first meet in more than three weeks. Lita Cammon finished second in both the 50 free (27.38) and the 100 free (27.38), while McCann added a third-place finish in the 200 free (2:25.2) and Pepprock placed fifth in the 200 individual medley (3:02.45). The 200 IM was another good race for the Ponies, as Jackie Martin swam to a second-place finish (2:56.85) and Jillian Reighard was sixth. Martin also placed fourth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:22.75.
Reighard wound up finishing her strong day with a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:26.61, while Celeste Luna was sixth in the same event. Lieza Reighard finished third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:21.13, while Havre stood out in the lengthy 500 free. Amelia Miller paced second in the race with a time of 6:10.73, while Vogel was fifth and Carly Rennick came in sixth. Miller had a good showing as well, also finishing second in the 200 free with a time of 2:15.41.
As usual, the Havre girls were strong in the relay races. The Pony A team finished second and the B team finished fifth in the 200 medley relay, while Havre had the same results in the 200 free relay. Havre was also second and third, respectively in the 400 free relay.
The relays were also good to the HHS boys. While the Ponies didn’t have the individual depth that the Rams and Bulldogs do, Havre captured first place in the 400 free relay. HHS also placed fourth in the 200 free relay and fifth in the 200 medley.
Individually, senior Ben Seigel led the way with a second-place finish in the 50 free (26.2) and a third in the 100 free (59.12). Zach Barnes finished fourth in the 50 free (29.49), while Jimmy May placed sixth in the 100 free. May also swam to a fifth-place finish in the 200 free, while senior Jamie Lieberg had a great showing in the same race. Lieberg placed third with a time of 2:26.91.
The Ponies matched the HHS girls by racing strong in the 100 breaststroke as well. Sophomore Shandon Oberquell placed second with a time of 1:25.66, while Clayton Twombly was fifth at 1:38.18. Twombly also placed fourth in the 500 free, while Logan Gardner rounded out the scoring for the Ponies with a sixth-place finish in the 100 backstroke.
With the break over, the Ponies will enter their busy stretch of the season. Havre jumps right back into the pool Saturday at the Great Falls Duals.
