Skylights rock Orediggers; Lights fall at home

The start to the season can't have gone any better for the No. 15 Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team. And Friday night, inside the Armory Gymnasium, the start to Frontier Conference play was near perfect. In their conference opener, the Skylights dismantled Montana Tech 78-37, improving to 1-0 in league play, and setting up a huge showdown with No. 12 Lewis-Clark State Saturday night.

Northern used a hot start, a smothering defense and a 15-1 run in the first half to blow by the talented Orediggers. The Skylights led 36-18 at half, and for the game, held Tech to just 28 percent shooting.

But the big story was senior A'Jha Edwards. Tech had no answer for the 6-5 Edwards, as she scored a season-high 27 points, while grabbing 16 rebounds. Edwards was 11-12 from the field and 5-8 from the free-throw-line. Natalee Faupel added 10 points in the victory.

Now, the 16-1 Skylights will look to grab a hold of the Frontier lead when they host the Warriors Saturday at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, things didn't go as well for the Northern men. Montana Tech won inside the Armory Gymnasium for the first time in 14 years, claiming a 76-67 win Friday night.

Tech jumped out to an early lead, but the Lights scrapped and clawed and finished the half on a 10-1 run, to lead 37-32 at the break. From there however, it was all Tech. The Orediggers scored the first nine points of the second half, and held Northern without a field goal for the first nine minutes of the stanza. The Lights, who shot just 24 percent from the floor, never recovered, though MSU-N did have two chances to shave the Tech lead down to five points with just under three minutes to play.

MSU-N, which came into the game shooting 46 percent from three, managed to make just 6-of-15 shots from beyond the arc. Nick Blount paced the Lights with 17 points, while Warren Edmonson added 13. Antonio Snow poured in a game-high 19 points and Adam Greger added 18 for the Orediggers.

The loss dropped MSU-N to 0-1 in league play and 11-6 overall heading into Saturday night's game with No. 21 Lewis-Clark State.
