Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Longhorns stay unbeaten; Beeters top Bears

After a short break, girls high school basketball returned to the Hi-Line this past weekend, along with the return of winter. Despite some nasty new year’s weather, all the games in our area went on as scheduled.

The first games of 2015 took place Friday night, and though the Rocky Boy Morning Stars lost, they put a major scare into the dynasty that is the Fairfield Eagles. In Fairfield Friday night, Rocky Boy nearly brought an end to the Eagles’ massive 109-game winning streak. But in the end, the Eagles escaped with a 54-49 District 1B win.

The Morning Stars, who suffered their first loss of the season, led 26-21 at halftime, and were in front 39-33 with eight minutes left. But down the stretch, the Eagles fought back, outscoring the Morning Stars 21-10 in the fourth quarter. Jai-Lynne Day Child scored 18 points and Jude The Boy added nine in the narrow loss for the Morning Stars.

Meanwhile, Friday night was a big night for the Turner girls. The Tornadoes were home where they blew out Dodson, 61-48 for their second win of the season. Turner scored 23 points in the first quarter and never looked back. Ella Billmayer poured in a game-high 19 points, while Raegan Conlan added 16.

Box Elder was in the same boat as Rocky Boy, nearly pulling off a huge road upset. But like the Morning Stars, the Bears came up short. Friday night in Highwood, the Bears fell 60-57. The Bears fell behind early, but outscored the Mountaineers 32-24 in the second and third quarters combined. However, Highwood, a Northern C powerhouse, had just enough to hold on for the win.

Leilani Gardipee scored 18 points for the Bears, while Tia Russell added 10 in the tough loss.

Big Sandy remained winless on the early season after losing 40-17 at Denton-Stanford-Geyser Friday night. D-G-S went on an 18-6 run to start the game and the young Pioneers could never catch up. Maddy Reichelt scored a team-high seven points for the Pioneers.

Saturday night, the focus turned back to District 9C action, and in a key showdown, the Chinook Sugarbeeters went into Box Elder and pulled off a 34-30 win. The game was a defensive struggle throughout, and while the Bears fought hard in the fourth quarter, they couldn’t erase Chinook’s slim lead.

Only three players scored for the Beeters, led by Hannah Weber’s 14 points. Sisters Katelyn Neibauer and Taylor Neibauer each scored 10. Tyra Gopher paced the Bears with eight points.

North Star picked up an important 9C road win Saturday night as well. The Knights went to Hays and beat the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds 48-30. The Knights used an 18-7 run in the first quarter to keep their distance from the improving T-Birds.

Mackenzie Hansen scored a game-high 15 points for the Knights, while Sheridan O’Neil chipped in with 10. Rayleigh Kirkaldie scored eight points for HLP.

The strong start to the season continued for the Fort Benton-Geraldine Longhorns, and at home Saturday night, they took care of Class B Conrad 41-30. The Longhorns broke open a close game with a 19-10 run in the third quarter. Maddie Hampton led the way for the Longhorns with nine points as they remained perfect this season.

And in a Class B game Saturday night, Harlem suffered a home loss at the hands of the 1B Cut Bank Wolves, 63-51. The Wildcats led 12-9 after the first quarter, but Cut Bank was too strong the rest of the way. Tesche Ereaux and Ticia Cliff each scored 13 points for the Wildcats in the loss.
