The Havre High swim teams got their first taste of regular season competition in the water last weekend. And the Blue Ponies did quite well at their own Havre Invitational.
But, as the season goes on, things will get much more difficult, and the season goes on today as Havre participates in a meet in Great Falls. Today's meet, and Saturday's Great Falls Relays will close out the 2014 portion of Havre's schedule, and head coach Jill Cammon said it will be good for her teams to see more competition.
"The Havre Invitational, and the two meets we have in Great Falls coming up are great," Cammon said. "Up until today (last Saturday), we had only been competing against each other. So the competition we're facing now is really good for us, and it will help us get through the Christmas break. Sometimes, that's tough, but these meets will certainly help us going forward."
Today, Havre will swim in a scoring meet with the likes of Great Falls High and CMR, both of which competed at last weekend's Havre Invite. But the Ponies will also get their first look at Class A rival Hardin. Saturday, the Ponies will take part in the Great Falls Relays, which feature relay-only races, and in that meet, fellow Class A power Billings Central will be in attendance, as will much of the rest of Class AA.
Both meets will be key for Havre's progress. The Pony girls had a successful start to the season last weekend, but still need to get some of their younger swimmers as much competition as possible. On the other side, the HHS boys are a young team overall, with a large sophomore class, so again, the more competition the better. And this weekend will provide that.
Today's meet in Great Falls will start at 4 p.m., and Saturday's meet, which will also be held at the Swarthout Fieldhouse Pool, will start at noon Havre will then be off until Jan. 9 when the Ponies travel to the Class A Invite in Hardin.
