Salvation Army short of fundraising goal

The Havre Salvation Army's Bonnie Bennett Memorial Kettle ring is in need of more volunteers.

Bonnie was a 33-year volunteer who rang the Salvation Army bell at the north door of Gary & Leo's Fresh Foods. She died in October, and the Salvation Army has struggled to find people to ring the bell in her honor.

While the Salvation Army has had some success, it is down $500 from where it was last year at this time, said Trina Crawford, executive director of The Salvation Army's Havre Service Center.

This is largely because at times there is no one ringing the Gary & Leo's bell for lack of volunteers.

“Please consider taking a couple of hours and ring the Bell for Bonnie," she said.

There are Red Kettle locations at Gary & Leo's, Kmart, Walmart and Holiday Village Mall.

As of now, the Salvation Army is down $2,000 from last year in its effort to reach the $26,000 goal.

The money raised during this campaign is put back into the community throughout the year.

The money will go to provide emergency food to the hungry, temporary lodging for the homeless and gas vouchers for people who need them.

People who want to volunteer can call 265-6411.
