Join United Way campaign - for Havre's sake

Editor:

Isn’t it wonderful that we are done with the phone calls and extra mail that was so frequent in the last few months?

We are free to get on with our daily lives and, as we head into the holiday season, it is time to be thankful for our many blessings and to take time to support those who are less fortunate than us.

I have had the privilege to be a member of the United Way Board of Directors and also in my professional life a recipient of the generosity of Havre and the surrounding area. I would like to take a few minutes to encourage everyone to become a partner in the United Way endeavors.

We have taken board packets to many business places. These consist of United Way information (what happens to the money? How do I give?) And messages from some of the recipients. These packets are meant to be shared with all employees.

Board members would like to come to your business and give a short presentation to explain our function and answer any questions that might need answering. United Way is not a campaign only for business people but for everyone from senior citizens (that’s me now, too) to first-graders who have contributed their coins at the school and have learned to share with those less fortunate.

Unfortunately, there has been a discussion about investigating the opinion of the community about United Way, and if it is needed in the community.

Ask any of the recipient organizations how they would make up the help they receive from United Way if we were not here to help.

If you decided to give $20 per month — less than $1 per day it would amount to $240 per year. If 500 families or units would do this, we would meet our goal. It seems like it is an attainable goal and one which Havre should be proud of.

Our United Way has a very capable director who has facilitated new programs like the reading program that gives every new baby born in Havre a book a month.

Some children would not have access to their own books without this program.

Please consider joining in the campaign to give the United Way a boost to help our community members. If you have questions I would be happy to talk with you. May you have a blessed holiday season filled with sharing and good will.
