Our View: Hi-Line darts and laurels

The Havre-Hill County Library has some great programs for young people. Children in one of the programs, Story Time, stayed late this week and made Christmas cards for soldiers stationed in Liberia. It is sort of a forgotten war these soldiers are taking part in. It's the war against Ebola. Soldiers help medical professionals in the effort to stop the deadly disease from spreading. It is important work — as important to our national security as an military operation. But these military personnel are sometimes forgotten. Thanks, kids at Havre-Hill County Library, for reminding us of these forgotten warriors and for taking the time to thank them for their work.

Drs. Marc Whitacre and Erica Farmer have done what many Havreites said could never be done. They have rehabilitated the historic old Post Office and U.S. Courthouse in downtown Havre. It was on its last legs when the two bought the building. They have overcome the obstacles and restored the building to as good as it has ever been — and probably better than it ever has been. Now the building has won a prestigious award from the Montana Historical Society for the rehab work. Congratulations.

An 85 mph speed limit for interstate highways in Montana? We think that's a bit excessive. The proposal will be debated by the Montana Legislature. Let's not be too hasty in adopting this change.

Havre City Council unanimously asked Canadian and U.S. governments to extend the hours at the Port of Wild Horse at the border north of Havre. If you thought you had read the story before, you have. It is getting a bit boring, but it is necessary. Having the gate opened more would be beneficial to businesses, industry and residents on both sides of the border. Sooner or later, governments to the north and south of the border will take heed.
