Kids make cards for Ebola-fighting soldiers

Local children made Christmas cards Wednesday during Story Time at Havre-Hill County Library for the 101st Airborne unit that is in Liberia, helping in the efforts against Ebola.

Lori Roberts, the children's librarian, said that she came up with the idea to send the cards overseas.

Roberts believe this brings people together.

"It brings together a community - it doesn't matter how far away they are," she said. "We have a lot of families here in Havre where (one's) husbands and wives and such get deployed."

Roberts said members of this Airborne unit have been deployed for two months and that it took one month for the unit to get their mailing address set up.

"They haven't had any mail for a month," she added. "It's very primitive there. ... This is one way that we can send our appreciation."

Corinne Acor, 4, participated in the card making. She said that her favorite part about making the Christmas cards was "drawing" and that she likes "the (color) pink."

Cera Roberts, 10, also participated.

"I like the soldiers because they're very generous, and they do so much for us," she said.

Tianna Cochran, 10, said her favorite part about making Christmas cards was coloring and writing notes for the Airborne unit.

"I think the soldiers will do good about fighting it," she added.

Gabriella Bender, 9, believes the soldiers will make a difference.

"I feel like the soldiers can stop it, and I appreciate them," she said.

In addition to the Christmas cards, the library is gathering donations and will be sending off a care package to the Airborne unit.

Items in need include: baby wipes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, gum, snacks, deodorant, hand sanitizer, hand lotion and homemade goodies.

Donations can be dropped off at the library children's area until Dec. 12. The care package will be sent the same day.

Monetary donations will be used to cover the shipping cost of the care packages.
