David Hopf, 46. of Havre, fired a single shot from a high-calibre weapon through the rear window of a car on 2nd St., Saturday night. Havre Police Chief Gabe Matosich said Monday night.
The bullet narrowly missed the driver of the car and exited from the front windshield, the chief said.
Hopf is being held without bail in the Hill County Detention Center, facing charges of attempted deliberate homicide.
Matosich said the vehicle was traveling west on 2nd St. between the 1600 Block and the 1500 Block when the shot was fired.
Police are trying to piece together what happened prior to the shooting, he said.
“We have been interviewing people all day,” he said.
“As of now, we are not certain of the motive,” Matosich said.
Through interviews, he said, police are working to figure out the details of Saturday night’s events, he said.
The chief said he hoped that information would be filed with courts today so proceedings against Hopf, he said.
The bullet was a danger to the driver of the car, he said, but was also a threat to passerby
“The important thing right now is that Havre is safe, people can be assured,” he said. “The suspect is in custody.”
