The Dillon Beavers are once again kings of Class A. Dillon didn’t even win the Southwest A title this season, but they came back to stun rival Butte Central in Saturday’s Class A state championship game in Butte.
Jason Ferris scored on a 22-yard run with 2:30 left in the game, and J.D. Ferris completed a two-point conversion pass to Nate Simkins, lifting the Beavers to a 29-28 win over the Maroons.
The Maroons led 28-14 with just over 10 minutes left in the game, and looked like they had Dillon stopped with under two minutes to go. But a huge fourth-down conversion allowed the Beavers to continue their fourth quarter rally, and eventually claim their second straight state title and third in the last four seasons.
Class AA
The Class AA state championship game was no contest. Friday night in Kalispell, Glacier High School earned its first state title in football by beating up on the CMR Rustlers, 56-19.
Led by head coach Grady Bennett, Glacier made up for last season’s loss to Bozeman in the state title game.
The Wolfpack jumped out to a quick 28-6 lead. CMR responded with a pair of TDs, but the Glacier offense, behind prolific quarterback Brady McChesney had just too much offense, and the Glacier defense held CMR star running back Andrew Grinde to just 82 yards on the night.
Class B
In Worden, the Townsend Bulldogs scored on a 67-yard pass play late in the fourth quarter to earn the Class B state championship Saturday afternoon, as the Bulldogs beat host Huntley-Project 14-7.
The Bulldogs led 7-0 at halftime in what was a true defensive struggle. The Red Devils had tied the game at 7-7 just 16 seconds before Townsend’s game-winning play. The win gave Townsend its first-ever state championship in football.
Six-Man
It was also back-to-back for the Geraldine-Highwood Rivals. Saturday, the Rivals upended Westby-Grenora 30-27 in the Class C Six-Man state championship game in Highwood.
The Rivals trailed 6-0 early on, but 19 unanswered points in the second quarter, and another 12 in the fourth was all they needed to win their second straight championship. The Rivals have only been a co-op for two seasons.
Darren Malek threw two TD passes for the Rivals, while Jake Malek caught one TD pass and ran for another in the win.
