All good things must come to an end and for the Chinook Sugarbeeters, their magical run toward the Class C 8-man state championship ended on Saturday in Wibaux.
The Longhorns, who had lost in their last six state championship game appearances, were a team on a mission and dominated Chinook from start to finish, knocking off the Beeters 46-14 in the 8-man title game.
The difference in the game was turnovers: Wibaux recovered three fumbles and forced two interceptions from Chinook quarterback Ian McIntosh. In all, the five takeaways led to 28 Longhorn points.
Wibaux got out of the gate quickly, scoring the first 32 points of the game. From there, the Longhorns never looked back and even though the Beeters were able to get on the scoreboard in the second half, via a Lane Seymour touchdown reception in the third quarter and Ian McIntosh touchdown run in the fourth, it was simply too little too late.
The Beeters finished their season 10-3 and fell in their first championship game appearance since 2010, when they defeated Wibaux 74-6. The Longhorns, on the other hand, completed a 13-0 season and won its first 8-man title since 2001.
