Santa Run OK'd by Havre council

The Santa Run, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 29, just prior to the annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in downtown Havre, has received approval from Havre City Council.

Havre Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Debbie Vandeberg told council that her group wanted to add some more excitement to the annual tree-lighting ceremony.

People are encouraged to dress up as Santa Claus, and kids are urged to wear elf costumes.

Registration will begin at 4 p.m. at Master Sports on 1st Street, and the race will start at 4:30 p.m. The route will be from Town Square to 9th Street — exactly one half mile. Runners and walkers will turn around at 9th Street and head back to Town Square in time for the tree lighting.

Department of Public Works employees and city police will help in the arrangements.

The Santa Run will be one of three events in the holiday-filled weekend.

The Santa Run will start at 4:30 p.m., the three-lighting will be at 5 p.m., and the Festival of Trees will be held at St. Jude Parish Center later that night.

In other news at Monday’s council meeting, council approved the hiring of probationary police officer Logan Creech.

Acting Police Chief Gabe Matosich praised Creech for his expertise and his character.

And when questioned by councilmen, KOJM news director Brandon Baney, who went to college with Creech, added a qualification Matosich left out.

“He’s a great three-point shooter,” Baney said.

Council also approved amending its building codes to comply with International Building Codes of 2012.

Public Works Director Dave Peterson said the Montana Department of Labor and Industry has urged municipalities throughout the state to update the codes.
