Boy Scout troops came together Monday night to collect nonperishable food items for the Havre Food Bank.
Troops 1438 and 1492, along with their supporters gathered outside Messiah Lutheran Church on the cold November evening, piled into cars and set out to collect the food items.
Thomas Huether, district executive of the Boy Scouts of America Montana Council, said one of the things Boy Scouts model is helping people at all times.
"What we're doing here is the Boy Scouts are getting out in the community and helping other people," he said. "It's a great opportunity for us to get out there, for the people to see the Boy Scouts - that we're still in existence and help the community."
Huether also said that this drive was planned within a few days.
"We're excited it worked out," he added.
Xavier Hernandez, 14, of Troop 1492 said he has been involved with Boy Scouts for three years. He said this food drive brought happiness and joy to the area.
"It (gave) us a chance to do something to help the community in Havre," he said. "I liked helping out the community."
Many Havre residents were generous and donated many nonperishable food items.
One resident donated two large cases of cans, in which Xavier Ulano, 11, of Troop 1438, and Hernandez were determined to carry on their own.
Hernandez said his favorite part of the food drive was gathering all of the food and seeing people smiling.
Aarron Thompson, 14, of Troop 1438, also believes this food drive made an impact.
"(It was) a great way to get in touch with the community and help the people that can't buy food, don't have homes - (it was) a really good thing to do," he said.
The food that was collected was taken to the Havre Daily News office, 119 2nd St., and will be transported to the Havre Food Bank sometime today.
