Havre military veterans and supporters came together Tuesday to honor those who have served or are currently serving in the military.
The celebration of the nation's heroes began at Town Square at around 11 a.m. Tuesday, with a rifle demonstration by the Veterans of Foreign War color guard. The group then moved into the Elks Lodge due to cold weather, where everyone attending got the opportunity to honor those involved in the military. A chili feed took place at the lodge as well.
Bob Nieuwenhuyse, the exalted ruler of the Elk Lodge presented a speech beside an American flag.
"Today, on Veterans Day, we gather to recognize our Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and National Guard service personnel who have sacrificed both in war, and in peace," he said. "It is beneath this flag that our troops have fought and sacrificed and given their lives in the last full measure of their devotion."
Nieuwenhuyse also said that these individuals made sacrifices in order to protect the people's liberty and ensure their freedom.
"The majority of the veterans that we honor today no longer actively serve in the military - many have gone on to become teachers, police officers, firemen and neighbors. Whether they wear the military uniform today, or wore it decades ago - veterans represent an unwavering dedication and exemplify the highest ideals of our nation," he added.
Nieuwenhuyse said that Veterans Day is a day to honor the courage of the men and women who have served in America's armed forces - including those who are currently protecting our nation from terrorist activities.
"It is frequently said of American veterans that all gave some, but some gave all," he said.
