The Glacier Nationals returned home after a five-game road trip, looking to get their second win of the 2014-15 season. Unfortunately, they ran into a Billings Bulls squad that had other ideas.
The Nationals and Bulls both play in the Frontier Division of the North American Tier 3 Hockey League and in their fourth matchup of the season, the Bulls pushed their record against Glacier to 4-0 with a 4-2 win at the Havre Ice Dome Saturday night.
With the loss, the Nationals dropped to 1-9-3 on the season, while the Bulls improved to 7-4 and maintained their third place position in the Frontier standings.
After both teams went scoreless for the first 16 minutes of the game, the fireworks started late in the first period when Steven Thompson scored an unassisted goal while the Bulls were shorthanded to take 1-0 lead with 3:36 to go in the opening period.
But the Nationals would not trail for long as Tommy Kaddatz scored a power play just 24 seconds later to tie the game and send into the second period with the score 1-1.
Then, with 15:42 left in the second period, Glacier took its first and only lead of the night, when Joshua Larson beat Billings’ goalie Alexander Meagher for a goal to put the Nationals ahead 2-1.
The Nationals held onto the one-goal advantage until the 3:46 mark in the second, when Ralfs Karelis scored a power play goal to even the score at 2-2. Then, with 1:05 to go in the period, Steven Thompson scored to give the Bulls a 3-2 lead.
The lead stayed at one for much of the third period until T.J. Theodosopoulos scored an unassisted power play with 7:52 remaining to give the Bulls a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish.
Meagher was credited with the win for the Bulls as he stopped 19 of the 21 shots fired in his direction. Ryan Lund was given the loss for the Nationals, despite racking up a total of 54 saves. The difference was that Lund faced 58 shots, 37 more than Meagher.
The Nationals remain in sixth place in the Frontier standings with just five points through 13 games. The loss also extended Glacier’s winless streak to seven games. The Nationals will be on the ice again this Friday when they will play host to the Helena Bighorns inside the Havre Ice Dome. The first puck will drop at 8 p.m.
