A group of local women are hoping to bring roller derby to Havre, and they already have a team name picked out — the “Bullhook Bombshells.”
Amber Wells, the founder of the Bullhook Bombshell, said that she has lived in many areas throughout the years where roller derby was more prominent. She then decided she wanted to bring a team to Havre.
“Just a few weeks ago I was like, ‘Hey you know what? Someone has to do it — I’ll do it myself,’” she said.
Wells then decided to make a Facebook page for the group. She said their page has more than 200 likes so far.
Wells added that that their goal is to start skating by January 2015.
“Our biggest challenge is finding a place to skate,” she said.
The Bullhook Bombshells hope to take over the location of the Mat Corner, at 135 2nd Street.
The Havre Public School District owns the Mat Corner; however, the building is set to go up for bidding once Havre High School finishes construction on the additions of their gymnasium.
“We don’t know our start-up cost because we don’t have a place to skate,” Wells said. “The school district owns it so they can’t sell it outright … We would actually have to bid on that.”
Because of this, Wells and her group are working on the process of applying for grants. She said they would need a grant of at least $125,000.
Even though the group is in its early stages of officially being formed, Wells said many individuals are interested in becoming a part of the organization.
“We have 34 signatures, 23 of which are skaters,” she said.
Wells said that the team's biggest goals are to find a place to skate and to become official members of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association.
“From there, we would do bouts with other teams across the state and the district, and we would do fundraisers for the community,” she said.
Wells added that her group has other positions available for coaching, refereeing and volunteering.
Lana Dramstad, member and co-founder of the Bullhook Bombshells said that she always loved roller derby and that she started roller skating when she was around 8 years old.
“When I heard that they were trying to get a team together in Havre, I was super excited,” she said.
Dramstad also said the group is looking for a place right now that would at least allow them to practice.
She added that the Bullhook Bombshells would be a non-profit organization and that their first organizational meeting will be held Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Community Room at Holiday Village Mall.
“Anybody who has any kind of interest in roller derby at all is more than welcome to come.” Dramstad said.
