Harlem, Rocky Boy runners shine at state

The 2014 high school cross country season came to an end Saturday afternoon. And for a select few local prep runners, it was a great ending.

At the Class B and C state meet, which was held at the Bill Roberts Golf Course in Helena Saturday, the Harlem boys earned a solid eighth-place finish with 287 points. Rocky Boy finished in 14th place with a score of 450. Red Lodge captured the state championship with 74 points. Manhattan was second and Townsend was third.

Individually, Harlem had three runners finish in the Top 30, led by Tristen Gone, who finished a stellar 14th with a time of 17:13.00. Lance Strike and Keahna Little were also outstanding for the Wildcats. Strike placed 22nd with a time of 17:33.49, while Little came in 27th with a time of 17:44.43.

Rocky Boy was without its top runner, Tristen Belgarde, but the Stars still had a strong showing. Isiah Murie led the way for the Stars with a 40th-place finish in 19:29.40. Trey Belgarde also finished 96th for the Stars.

In the girls meet, Rocky Boy placed 14th as a team, while the Wildcats didn’t have enough runners for a team score. Rocky Boy’s top individual finish came from Sean Henry, who placed 47th with a time of 22:39.63. Harlem’s Valene Talks Different placed 42nd with a time of 22:16.28.

Manhattan won the girls meet with 91 points, while Red Lodge was second and Bigfork was third.

In the Class C races Saturday, Hays-Lodge Pole had a good showing on both sides. The HLP boys finished in 15th place with overall, while Tough Snow ran a 18:37.27 to finish 22nd overall. Frank Runs Above also finished 63rd, while Jeremy Tincher finished 81st. On the girls side, Dianna Snow was HLP’s lone runner. She finished in 49th place with a time of 24:28.36.

Culbertson captured the Class C boys state championship, while Ennis was second and Plenty Coups third. West Yellowstone won the Class C girls title, while Winnett finished second and Twin Bridges third.
