In her latest novel, “Bittersweet,” Colleen McCullough, author of “The Thorn Birds,” has journeyed back to Australia to give us a romantic saga of four sisters living in the tumultuous times of the 1920’s and 1930’s.
Two sets of twins are the daughters of a minister from the Church of England and have been raised to be proper, well-educated ladies. Together the Latimer sisters decide to enroll in a training program for nurses — a new option for women. They will be on the ground floor of a new program which will educate women in the field of sciences and nursing.
Each Latimer sister has her down idea of what her future will hold. During their training, the sisters are subjected to the hard demands of hospital life. The people they encounter challenge their maturity and independence. As nurses cannot be married, each sister must make decisions about love, her career and what she values the most.
Meticulously researched, this warm and compelling novel about the bonds of sisterhood needs to be read from cover to cover. A recommended read with a surprise ending.
