Celebrating history: The Blaine, Phillips split

We take a look at the Sept. 25, 1914 issue of The Havre Plaindealer for this 38th installment celebrating the 150th anniversary of Montana Territory and 125th anniversary of our statehood.

Front page news included a story about Hill County's display at the State Fair in Helena, praise for both cattle and grains grown in this area, a meeting about the Wonderland Trail was being organized for the winter, a column about the new oil well west of Havre, the Many Glacier Hotel was under construction, people in Malta were gathering signatures to create Phillips County out of Blaine County, and this short article regarding the Hill County Fair:

KREMLIN AWARDED CUP FOR EXHIBIT

Demonstrating the fact that quantity does not always win out, Kremlin captured the silver cup donated by the Great Northern railway for the best community display at the Hill county fair. There were many exhibits larger than the one from Kremlin, but the judges evidently worked from the standpoint of quality, and the little city to the west is today the proud possessor of the cup, which was taken there on Monday of this week by John B. Schlitz, who diversifies his farming duties by peddling lumber in Kremlin and vicinity.

There was quite a number of interesting entries in the social columns. In the society column, there was a lengthy article about the recent nuptials between Miss Elizabeth Richards and William Carlton Bouton. The ceremony took place at the Hotel Havre and presided over by Presbyterian Reverend Prentiss H. Case from Larimore, North Dakota. The bride's clothing was described in detail, while the groom was reported to have worn "the conventional black." The wedding breakfast, consisting of a four-course meal, was also mentioned, as was this celebratory dinner held in their honor:

Beautiful Dinner

Mrs. D. H. Boone was hostess on Friday evening at a handsomely appointed dinner in honor of Miss Elizabeth Richards, whose marriage to Mr. William Carlton Bouton, occurred last Saturday. The table showed attractive decorations in pink roses and lilies of the valley, arranged in a crystal vase and surrounded with a wreath of maiden hair fern. The ladies received as favors dainty white tulle bags holding corsages of pink sweet peas, with lilies of the valley for the honoree. An elaborate six-course menu was enjoyed and seated were Miss Richards, Mr. Bouton, Miss Broadwater, Miss Carrier, Mr. and Mrs. L. R. McKenzie, and the host and hostess.

The new Carnegie library on Fourth avenue is now under roof, and it is thought it will be ready for occupancy within thirty days. It is a handsome structure, and when completed will be a distinct addition to the beautiful structures for which Havre is noted. The public library will be moved from its present location in the city hall just as soon as the new building is ready to receive it.
