The MSU-Northern Lights had their chances to upset the No. 9 Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears Saturday at Blue Pony Stadium. But in the end, it wasn't meant to be. Five turnovers cost Northern a chance to upset the nationally-ranked Bears in a 32-18 loss.
Northern's defense played extremely well against the high-octane Bears, and the Lights only trailed 11-3 at halftime as the Lights got a Jordan Reuschhoff field goal. But the Bears raced ahead 25-3 in the third quarter on a Bryce Baker TD pass.
Northern stormed back, recovering an RMC fumble for a score, then getting a 3-yard Zach McKinley touchdown to pull within 25-18 with just over six minutes to go. But in the ensuing seconds, RMC put the game away as Cedric Foster returned a kickoff 88 yards to put the Bears up two scores, and that turned out to be the final margin.
With the loss, Northern fell to 0-2 in the Frontier Conference and 1-2 overall. RMC improved to 3-0 and 2-0 in league play. The Lights will travel to Dillon to take on UM-Western next Saturday.
