The Montana State University-Northern men’s and women’s golf teams now have a tournament under their belt this season.
In less than ideal conditions, the Lights and Skylights competed at the season-opening Montana Tech Invitational Monday and Tuesday at the Butte Country Club. The tournament featured 36 holes Monday and another 18 in Tuesday’s final round.
Out of the nine teams in the women’s field, the Skylights finished sixth overall. Team scores and individual scores were incomplete at press time from the women’s tournament, but Westminster did win the event with a 645. Competing for the Skylights was Ashley Hooper, who fired a round of 92, and was inside the Top 20 after the first 18 holes. Kirsten Bense, Carrigan Jones and Molly Kreycik also played for the Skylights in Butte.
On the men’s side, Northern didn’t have enough players to compete for a team score. Westminster finished first with a 873, followed by Lewis-Clark State, which finished just one stroke back. Also in attendance were players from Rocky Mountain College, Carroll College, Montana Tech and Great Falls.
Individually, Northern’s Taylor Allery finished with rounds of 90, 85 and 87, which put him in 38th place. Tanner Shanks shot 92, 111 and 126, for 41st place and Mikal Mavencamp posted rounds of 113, 118 and 124 for 43rd overall.
Former Hi-Line standout Jordy Donoven, playing for RMC, shot rounds of 74, 77 and 75 to finish in a tie for 15th.
The Frontier golf season will continue with the Great Falls Invitational Oct. 6-7 and Meadowlark Country Club.
