Warren leads young Pony spikers
With every season, new hope emerges, and for the Havre High volleyball team, there is optimism that the Ponies can make it back to the Class A State tournament for the first time under head coach Melanie Skoyen.
The Ponies, who will debut in front of their hometown fans Thursday night at the HHS gymnasium against Conrad, are young, talented and athletic. They are ready to prove they can compete with the best that Class A volleyball and leading them in their quest is senior Jordyn Warren.
Warren is a dual-sport athlete who stars for the Havre High softball team as well as playing volleyball for the Ponies. Warren also competed in tennis for HHS, and is an excellent all-around athlete.
She played an integral role for the HHS softball team that earned its first-ever win at the Class A state tournament last spring. But now, she is focused on volleyball and reaching the state tournament before her days as a Blue Pony volleyball player are done.
Thanks in large part to Warren, the Ponies have gotten the 2014 season off to a solid start. The team did lose a pair of Central A divisional games last Friday in Belgrade, falling to both Belgrade and Livingston. Yet, HHS rallied and earned third place at the annual Windy City Classic, its best finish at the tournament in years.
Warren, who is entering her second season as a starter, is a defensive specialist for the Ponies and currently leads the Central A conference with 68 digs overall and 33 digs in Central A conference play.
Warren is tough, competitive and feisty, which is why she does so well as a defensive specialist and if the Ponies are going to achieve their goals this season, her play will be a big reason why.
"I wouldn't be surprised if Jordyn was all bruised up, after the way she played, she was all over the place for us," Skoyen said of Warren's play last weekend. "She is a really tough competitor."
The Havre Daily News caught up with Warren this week ahead of the Ponies' home-opener Thursday against Conrad and asked the dual-sport athlete five questions.
HDN: Have you always been a defensive specialist?
Warren: "Yes, I have been playing there since my freshmen year."
HDN: What do you like about playing that position?
Warren: "I like it because I get all the balls. I get the digs"
HDN: Which sport is your favorite, volleyball or softball?
Warren: "Volleyball."
HDN: What do you guys need to do to get back to the state tournament?
Warren: "We need to just keep working hard and staying excited to play."
HDN: What have you enjoyed the most about playing volleyball for the Ponies?
Warren: "I am going to miss the game and competing."
