Local Golf Report: Champion crowned at Prairie Farms

From Tee to Green...

Two weeks ago, it was the men who finished up their league season. Last week it was the ladies. And though there is still plenty of time to golf this fall, and hopefully a lot of good weather left, I too must finish up.

This is the last From Tee to Green I'll pen for 2014. But more on that later.

First, congratulations to DA Davidson, which captured the women's league championship last Thursday night at Prairie Farms Golf Course. In the championship match, DA Davidson, composed of Shari Baltrusch, Melanie Gilman, Paula Sheppard and Patsy Divish, defeated Makin Waves 19-17. Karla Bolken also played for DA Davidson this season.

The ladies also played a third-place match Thursday night, and that was won by Schubert Agency, which defeated Scharfe, Kato & Co. 19.5-16.5. In the final night of the playoffs, Ali Ward was low gross with a 43 and Judi Adams was low net with a 30.

Just a reminder, the women's association will have a fall meeting Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Prairie Farms. All teams need to attend. There will be elections for the president and secretary positions.  Pay-outs for both the regular season and tourney will be distributed at the meeting.

Men's league playoffs were also wrapped up at Signal Point in Fort Benton recently. IN the championship match, Benton Pharmacy defeated Tilleman Motor Co. 21-19. First Security Bank finished third.

The tournament scene is still ongoing at Prairie Farms, and last week was a busy one. Last Friday night, the annual Shot In the Dark tourney was held with a good turnout. And on Sunday, Prairie Farms hosted its annual men's club championship.

For the second straight year, Jeremy Jensen was crowned club champion, after he fired a 74 on Sunday. In the first flight, Dr. Kevin Harada also shot 76, Justin Newton 78, Kyle Sheppard 79 and Matt Hedstrom 80. Jim Kirkpatrick won the second flight with an outstanding 80 and Brad Rhukamp won the third flight with an 81. Low net winners on Sunday included Harada, Hedstrom, Buzz Pizzini, Lunar Evans, Jacob Lorang and Mike Ritz.

One final reminder, the Havre Wrestling Club Scramble is scheduled for this weekend at Prairie Farms. To sign up, call the Pro Shop.

Tournament gof wasn't the only excitement this past week on the golf course. It seems this season has yielded very few hole-in-one's, but Havre's Darin Miller got an ace last week. On Sunday evening, Miller aced Prairie Farmms' par-4 4th hole from 157 yards out. Miller used a 7-iron for the shot, which was witnessed by Ron Miller, Jacob Miller and Doug Wolter. Well done Darin.

So, now comes the part I don't enjoy too much...admitting that, at least for me, golf season is coming to a close. I hope I'll get out and play a few more times, but fall sports now come first in my world.

I'd like to take this time to say thank you to Matt Hedstrom and Teresa Brown for doing an outstanding job of providing me with golf league results all season long. This column wouldn't be half as interesting without those results, because, after all, it's about you, the golfers.

I'd also like to wish the Havre High golf teams the best of luck on their rest of their 2014 season, and take this opportunity to remind anyone, that, while this is the last From Tee to Green for the season, if you have any more golf news, please send it to me and I will get it on the sports pages.

It's been another terrific year of golf on the Hi-Line. I do wish the weather would have been a litter more summer-like, and like every year, I can look back and say I wish I would have played better at times, but overall I have to say it was enjoyable. I love the game of golf. It is something that is important to my life, and I know it's important to many of you too. And honestly, though there's a lot of great sports to cover and write about over the next eight months, I really can't wait until spring returns in 2015, and golf fires back up for yet another season.

And when the snow that's sure to come, finally goes away. When there's no more -50 wind chills to worry about, and when the grass starts to turn that shade of green we all love, when golfers come out of hibernation, I'll be there, to write about all again.

See you all in the spring.
