From Tee to Green...
Golf is hitting the dog days of August and with the heat, likely will come low scores around the area.
And speaking of low scores, former North Star High School three-sport star Jordy Donoven showed a few this past weekend at the 97th annual Montana State Men’s Amateur. The most prestigious golf tournament in Montana each year was held at the Whitefish Lake North Course last Thursday through Saturday, and Donoven was certainly the top local in the event. He shot an opening-round 71 Thursday and was alone in second place, trailing only eventual champion, and perhaps Montana’s best all-around golfer, University of Oregon star Brandon McIver. Donoven had a rough second day in windy conditions in Whitefish, but he bounced back to fire an even-par 72 Saturday. Overall, Donovan placed an outstanding T14 in an event that didn’t just feature McIver, but also University of Michigan golfer Tom Swanson of Missoula, as well as a tough field of Montana’s best players.
Donovan will soon turn his attention to his junior season of Frontier Conference golf at Rocky Mountain College, where he also plays basketball.
Longtime Havre golfer Steve Johnstone also competed in Whitefish and finished first in the No. 9 Flight.
The ladies also teed it up this weekend, as the Montana Women’s State Amateur and Montana Women’s Senior Am were both held at Yellowstone Country Club in Billings. Havre’s Teresa Brown competed in the State Women’s Amateur and shot rounds of 104, 110 and 114 to finish sixth in her flight.
Congrats to everyone who teed it up this past weekend. It takes a lot of confidence to play in the state am, so well done to everybody who did.
On the home front, the tournament schedule returns to Prairie Farms Golf Course this weekend as the annual Northern Montana Health Care Foundation Scramble will take place Saturday. The tournament is one of the most competitive events on the local golf scene, and I’m certain this year will be no exception to that.
In league golf at Prairie Farms last Thursday, D.A. Davidson and Northern Montana Hospital tied for high-team honors, each scoring 26 points. Carol Culp, Connie Peterson and Kelsey Ward all shared low gross, each shooting 43, while Terry Lillevedt and Denise Floren each earned low net with 30.5.
Last Tuesday night saw Bing-N-Bobs earn high-team honors in men’s league with 22.5 points. The team was made up of Lunar Evans, Bill Evans, Jeremy Jensen and Jeff Jensen. Kyle Sheppard and Dave Boles shared low gross, each shooting a 1-over-par 37, while Brett Preeshl was low net with a 31. Last Wednesday night saw Independence Bank take high team with 22 points. Todd Smith, Dennis Murphy, Byron Ophus and Eric Whiting made up the squad. Jeff Jensen and Justin Newton each fired even-par rounds of 36 for low gross, while Smith netted a 30.
