Alternative high school moving

The Havre Public School District Board of Trustees listened Tuesday to Superintendent Andy Carlson’s plan to move the alternative high school back into the Robins Administration building.

The alternative high school is an option for students who find they are not excelling at Havre High School for whatever reason. It is designed to help students make their way to their high school diploma if the standard high school environment is not working out for them.

Three years ago, the alternative high school was moved from Robins into Havre High School. Carlson said he was one of the ones supporting it then, but the move has not worked out for the betterment of the alternative high school.

Robins is not a great place to move the students, but it is the best option available, Carlson said.

Keeping the identity of the alternative high school was one of the main reasons for moving the school back.

Transportation for the students was a concern at the school board meeting.

Jim Donovan, director of grounds and transportation for the district, was asked if providing transportation for the students would be a possibility.

“We can do it, but it’s going to cost money,” Donovan said.

To begin, only juniors and seniors will be accepted at the alternative high school.

“It’s not a condemnation of the high school; it’s not a condemnation of the people running the program,” Carlson said. “It’s just not working out.”

There was no vote taken for the decision to move the alternative high school back to Robins, as it was not on the agenda.

The items the school board had to vote on dealt with monetary issues such as banking agreements and funding for Medicaid billing.

Trustee committee appointments were also made, which will have the trustees take a look at the schools’ curriculum and review it.

Donovan also presented a plan to buy a new coach bus for $280,000 and spend over $7,000 to prepare it for use. If the board allows the purchase, it will be the last coach bus they will have to pay for until 2028, Donovan said.

Wow, I completely agree with you. There is no administrative lead at Havre High School or from Robin's! It's a joke. The program was working. It's just now stretching teachers too far. Carlson puts on a wonderful public face, but the schools are simply...not a tradition of excellence. Better leadership is needed.

Interesting that a superintendent would say such things without ever visiting the new program a single time. This is terrible leadership. Get involved. I know there were people who tried changing the new system; these people weren't listened to. Listen to your employees and get involved for once. Carlson, do more than take photos with babies!
