Free summer meals given to kids

Free meals to kids 18 and under are being given out at Lincoln-McKinley Primary School.

Carol Wolf, the main organizer of the program, said that the program is "semi-successful," but she would like to see more kids in the cafeteria for lunch and breakfast.

"Right now, we're getting about 100 per lunch and maybe 40 for breakfast every day," Wolf said.

Wolf said she would like to see 150 to 200 kids coming to eat, complements of her program.

The program at the school is funded by the Montana Office of Public Instruction and exists to give kids somewhere to go to get a free meal.

"The food is good, the cook is wonderful - the whole staff is pretty wonderful," Wolf said.

The meals are served from 8 to 10:30 a.m. every weekday for breakfast and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every weekday for lunch.

The menu changes every day, but is always in accordance with what the school usually serves throughout the year.

"The menu is awesome," Wolf said. "It really focuses on what we're supposed to have for the food program."

The program is only in effect through the summer, from June 9 to Aug. 8.

Wolf said the best part about the program, besides that they are feeding the kids, is community outreach.

"We get to know the community more, the family more and the kids that come in through the school year know that they can come in and be served," Wolf said. "This is nothing but a plus-plus program for anybody. It's just so good to meet these people and do something that's good for them."

The free meal is for kids 18 and under, and no paperwork is required to take part. For anyone over 18, the meals cost $3.75 for lunch and $2.75 for breakfast.

Wolf said they feed kids and adults of all ages, from babies to grandparents, and she hopes to see and serve more people in the community.
