Havre Daily News page designer Caleb Hutchins won the trifecta at the Montana Newspaper Association’s annual awards ceremony in Butte this weekend.
Hutchins won first, second and third place in the competition for best headline writing.
The Havre Daily News competed in the circulation category for daily newspaper with circulation up to 15,000. That included newspapers from Bozeman, Miles City, Livingston, Butte, Hamilton and Helena.
In the headline competition, contestants were asked to submit up to three packages of headlines on stories during 2013. All three submitted by the Havre Daily News were selected as winners by the judges, editors from the Nevada Press Association.
In other contests:
• Managing editor John Kelleher won first and third place in the editorial writing competition for a series of editorials during the year.
• Kelleher came in second place in the column writing category.
• The Havre Daily News website was judged the second-best website in the category.
Havre Daily News Publisher Stacy Mantle said she was pleased with the results.
“I am extremely impressed with our editorial staff bringing home seven awards with the tough competition we had and for going through a transition of websites just within the last two years,” she said. “To receive an award for it is overwhelming.”
