HHS's Lacey Waid finishes second in the pole vault, Filius sixth in the 800 meters in Butte
BUTTE — The competition at the state level skyrockets in comparison to the regular season, and the Havre High track and field team got a heavy dose of the tough pool of talent over the weekend.
Friday and Saturday the Central A Blue Ponies competed at the Class A state track meet at Bulldog Memorial Field in Butte. And while the talented Ponies didn’t make much of dent in the team standings, the talented individuals in attendance this season still gave it all they had had over the two days. The Havre boys didn’t earn a top six place or score any team points, but the Havre girls got on the board with top places by two individuals. The HHS girls finished the weekend with nine points and as the No. 14 team.
“It was a wonderful weekend,” Havre High head coach John Ita said. “The competition was great and there were several state records that got broken. There were so many strong teams down there and that was an eye opener for our tea, but I think it was also great motivation for our younger athletes. It was just great to see all of the great competition and our kids were excited to be there.”
Seniors Peyton Filius and Lacey Waid both finished in the top six for the Ponies. Filius placed for the second straight year in the 800 meters as she ran a personal best of 2:27.08 and finished in sixth place. Filius ran a great race, as she was able to hover around the middle of the pack until sprinting the final stretch and sneaking into the sixth, and final, top spot for Havre. And Waid performed well in the pole vault, capping off her dominating season with a No. 2 finish at the highest prep level. Waid set a new Havre High record, clearing 10-6 this season, and she hit that mark again Saturday. Waid finished behind Corvallis’ Katelyn Frost, who cleared 11-6.
“We were very proud of Lacey and Peyton for what they did this weekend,” Ita said. “We have gotten so much out of them this year, and they showed great senior leadership all year long. That is so valuable to the team, and it was like having two more coaches out there for us. They are both so strong and competitive and they are a great example of that hard work paying off.”
And while other top finishes were hard to come by, the Blue Ponies still performed well and turned in some good times and marks.
Freshman Nick Keller tied a previous best and cleared 5-8 in the high jump, while the girls short relay turned a new best of 52.96 and the girls long relay turned in a new best of 4:16.67. The long relay finished just outside the top six in tenth place. Nate Rismon also earned a personal record, in the 200, with a time of 23.72, while Mike Loftus did the same with a time of 23.98. Rachel David also turned in a new personal record, in the 400-meter run, when she ran a 1:02.18.
Havre turned in a solid effort all around, and that hopefully means big things for the future. With several athletes returning, there is already excitement about competing next season after the state meet.
“Everyone competed hard, and that resulted in a lot of personal records,” Ita said. “It was good for our younger kids to face this kind of talent and kids like Mike (Loftus) told me they couldn’t wait for next year, and that is exactly what you want as a coach. It was a good weekend and we met a lot of our goals.”
The Corvallis girls and Hamilton boys captured the 2014 Class A state team championships.
