Rocky Boy, Big Sandy hit with hail

Areas of Hill and surrounding counties were pelted with hail Wednesday night and received some damage.

Chrissa Oliva, the supervisor of the Rocky Boy Emergency Medical Service, said Rocky Boy was hit by hailstorms Wednesday night.

“It didn’t last very long, but it seemed like a long time,” Oliva said.

Oliva said the stones were probably as big as golf balls and that they caused some damage to vehicles in the area, including police vehicles. She added the hail dropped from around 7 to 7:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service reported that between the hours of 6:18 and 8:18 p.m. in Rocky Boy, the area received around .96 inches of rain and had winds up to 24 miles per hour with gusts up to 43 at 7:18 p.m.

An airport hanger in Big Sandy was destroyed by the storm that sent down hailstones as big as ping pong balls, KRTV reports.

“It hailed like crazy for a while,” said Wendy Kleinsasser, the Big Sandy city clerk.

Kleinsasser confirmed that the airport hanger was damaged, but said she was unaware of any other major damage.
